Claude Birkett Ferenbaugh (1899-1975) was born in Dresden, New York. After graduating from West Point in 1919, he commissioned in the infantry. He graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1937 and the Army War College in 1940. He served at the War Department General Staff from 1941 to 1942. He became chief of staff for operations at I Corps, North African Theater of Operations in 1942. He served again at the War Department General Staff from 1943 to 1944.
